I agree with you guys, this was merely using Eklund's numbers to prove that he's a moron and doesn't take things like cap room into consideration.

Satan on waivers is an interesting move and could mean that something big is in the works.

Judas 2.0. hah!

Kevin, i think you're right about the cap issue.

Factor in that Satan is on waivers now... Gabby could definitely be acquired for the stretch.

What would it cost? I can't think that it would be very much. But I think it's more likely that Risebrough just flat refuses to trade Gaborik out of spite.

Maybe I'm a little naive to the whole salary cap thing, but using the cap numbers over at www.nhlnumbers.com it looks like the Pens have plenty of space for Gaborik or Pronger if they want this year. Due to their Long Term IR and Bonus Cushion it looks like they have about $3.6 million free (which would be plenty to accommodate the remaining 25% of either of their contracts). Of course, they'd take a hit to their cap room next year due to overage from bonuses, but still, the wiggle room is there I think.

Like I said, maybe I'm just interpreting the cap issues incorrectly, but just my 2 cents.

Unless this is a larger package involving Staal, the Sharks won't be in the charity business tomorrow. Any deal with the Sharks must make them better now.

Big fan of both your blog, and the pens........Up here in Toronto we have a sorta crazy web personality known as Kayvon, He has recently put out a video featuring him with several members of the Pens that you might find interesting, it has been making the rounds here in Canada for the past week or so......The video features Sidney Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and a couple other pens players on Valentine Day in Toronto.....Hope you enjoy:

Hate to break it to you, but I heard a version of that deal from a very connected source, so, IMO, there's some legitimacy to it.

To be fair, not making the playoffs with the two top point getters is pretty bad as well. The Pens HAVE to move a centre if they want to get better next year. Staal is the obvious choice and I wouldn't necessarily recommend moving Malkin, but their top 2 players make over 17 million...and in 2010 (with a presuambly lower cap) even with Gonchar gone they'll have over 34 million committed Malkin/Crosby/Staal/Whitney/ Orpiks/Fleury (and presumably Letang and Goligoski will be at least 4 mill combined) - this is not a recipe for success - Ray Shero better do something because their is no good reason to suck for so many years, land some Hall of fame players and very good players with high draft picks and be mediocre...
